Scientists Uncover the Tiniest Human Ancestors Ever
Discovery of Hobbit-Like Hominins in Indonesia
Tiny Bones and Teeth Reveal Remarkable Size
In a groundbreaking discovery, researchers have unearthed the remains of an exceptionally small human species that inhabited Indonesia over 700,000 years ago. The ancient bones, found on the island of Flores, belong to a hobbit-like hominin that stood just over 3 feet tall.
The findings, published in the journal Nature, shed light on the previously unknown diversity of human ancestors. A tiny arm bone fragment, measuring a mere 88 millimeters in length, indicates the smallest adult hominin on record.
Further analysis of the bones and teeth reveals that these early humans were even smaller than the smallest known human pygmies today. Scientists estimate that they stood around 6 centimeters shorter, a significant difference considering the average height of modern pygmies is around 4 feet.
The discovery of these hobbit-like ancestors challenges our understanding of human evolution and raises questions about the range of adaptations that have shaped our species over time.
