7.4-Magnitude Quake Strikes, Causing Significant Damage
One Person Killed, Infrastructure Damaged
A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Thursday, causing widespread damage and at least one death. The quake, which occurred around 10:36 PM local time, was centered near the city of Antofagasta and was felt across a wide area of the region.
The National Emergency Response Service (ONEMI) reported that one person was killed in the earthquake, and several others were injured. Buildings and infrastructure across the region sustained significant damage, including collapsed homes and damaged roads and bridges.
The epicenter of the quake was located about 30 miles northeast of Antofagasta, in a sparsely populated area. The quake was initially reported as having a magnitude of 7.3, but it was later revised to 7.4 by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
