Papua New Guinea: A Biodiversity Hotspot Under Threat
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a land of unparalleled biodiversity. It boasts an estimated 152,100 higher plants, 3,000 species of orchids, 800 species of coral, 600 species of fish, 250 species of mammals, and 760 species of birds. However, this rich natural heritage is under threat.
According to the IUCN Red List, there are 4315 species of animals in PNG, of which 143 are threatened with extinction. This includes iconic species such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, the Snow Leopard, and the Green Sea Turtle.
The main threats to PNG's biodiversity are habitat loss, hunting, and pollution. Habitat loss is primarily driven by the expansion of agriculture, logging, and mining. Hunting is a major problem in PNG, as many species are targeted for their meat, fur, or feathers.
Conservation Efforts in PNG
The government of PNG has recognized the need to protect its biodiversity and has established a number of conservation areas, including 10 national parks and 23 wildlife management areas. However, these areas are often underfunded and understaffed, and they face a number of challenges, such as illegal logging and mining.
